Within the data centre there are now, for the first time, products available which can dramatically reduce power usage. This is good for the budget and good for the environment.
During quiet times, such as after 7.00pm and before 7.00am, the demand on a company's computing resources can fall dramatically. Why do you need all the servers running at less than 5% utilisation?
Through the effective use of virtualisation, load balancing and automated powering up and down of servers, the required services can be provided using a smaller number of servers. The servers not utilised can be powered down and power can be saved. Once needed again these servers can be automatically powered up so the required computing power is available when needed.
